Daryl is the fifth generation to be involved in
gospel music. His great-great-great-grandfather, Samuel Smith was a circuit riding preacher in the 1800's and he
and his sons traveled around singing as a quartet in revivals and other church services. Daryl's grandfather sung
as the Dixon Brothers and his dad and mom sang with the Shawnettee Gospel Singers. Daryl got his start in gospel music
at an early age.... with his brothers Bill, Vernon and John and sister, Gloria, affectionately known as "The Calton Kids".
They had a full band with Daryl on the drums, Gloria at the piano and Vernon on the bass guitar. In his early teen years Daryl
joined The Singing Kinsmen, who traveled all across Tennessee, northern Alabama, and parts of Mississippi, Arkansas and Texas
spreading the gospel in song.
Lisa is a third generation of gospel music vocalists in her family. Her grandfather, Fred
Huntley sung with The Living Waters Quartet in the 50's and her dad, Tony Huntley, sang with The Lowell McGee
Singers in the 60's and 70's, where she was introduced into the singing ministry. Lisa has been singing
since she was just a little girl. Her dad would stand her on the piano stool in several local churches and she would
sing her heart out. Lisa also played the organ for the Lowell McGees and sang with them on several occasions. Lisa
joined The Singing Kinsmen after she and Daryl were married, which brings us to the present version of their family's
ministry of gospel music presently known as "The Caltons."
Darriel Mitchell got started singing early in life
at the ripe old age of six. His Dad and Mom started the family group called The Singing Mitchell Family in 1962. The
family group consisted of Dad, Mom, brother Danny, sisters Sharron and Shelby. A few years later Darriel started singing along
with younger brother Dewayne. Danny married a singer also (Pam Watson) and later in years they formed a group called The Soul
Harvesters. Shelby played piano, Dewayne played bass guitar, and Darriel played steel guitar. His brothers Dewayne, Danny and
his wife Pam were the original members of The Singing Ambassadors. Darriel's wife, Robin, also comes from a long
line of gospel singers. She was a member of The Singing Jones Family even at a very young age. Darriel went a
different direction and started singing with a group known as The Swordsmen. He also has a nephew (Brent Mitchell) that sang
tenor with Mercy's Mark. So as you can tell, he has a long History of southern gospel music.
Tim Jones comes from a long
line of preachers and gospel singers. His grandfather was a Freewill Baptist preacher for 61 years and traveled
hundreds of miles on horseback to preach the gospel. Tim has one uncle, one brother, and one nephew that has
answered the call to preach as well. His parents, Dallas and Cloteel Jones, started singing in 1940 as The Singing
Jones Family. Tim, along with his brothers, Jack, Bob, and Roger sang with the group, and also his sister,
Frances. Tim is also one of the "original members" of The Singing Ambassadors and was
recorded as the bass singer, along with other members, Dewayne Mitchell, Danny and Pam Mitchell and Jerry Edgil on their
very first album. Tim is very grateful to his mom and dad and family for their inspiration, support, and love
for the gospel.
Dewayne is Darriel's younger brother. He was also the original keyboard player for "The
Singing Ambassadors". He like his brother was a part of their family group "The Mitchell Family". His
love for gospel music was instilled in him by his parents. Dewayne also followed his brother from The Mitchell Family to The
Soul Harvesters where Dewayne was the bass quitar player.
